Battle context

The Battle of Kronstadt was a naval engagement fought in the Gulf of Finland west of the Kronstadt fortress during the Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790. Swedish naval forces sought to neutralize the Russian Kronstadt squadron with two linked objectives: preventing separate Russian squadrons from combining into a unified fleet, and opening a maritime approach toward Kronstadt and Saint Petersburg. The engagement reflected Sweden's broader strategic ambition to achieve naval dominance in the Gulf of Finland and press toward Russia's imperial capital. Russian forces suffered several hundred casualties in the action. The outcome is not definitively recorded, but the operational stakes — fleet concentration and access to Saint Petersburg — placed this battle at the center of Swedish naval strategy in the final phase of the war.
