Battle context
The Battle of Krabbendam was part of the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland in 1799, a Coalition effort to expel French and Batavian Republican forces from the North-Holland peninsula. The British division under Abercromby, having secured a bridgehead in the extreme north of the peninsula following the Battle of Callantsoog, engaged Franco-Batavian forces under Brune at Krabbendam. The engagement formed a sequence of actions contesting control of the peninsula, with the earlier bridgehead at Callantsoog providing the operational foothold from which this action developed. French casualties of 1,876 indicate a substantial engagement, though the recorded outcome does not specify which side held the field. The battle sits within a broader campaign that ultimately failed to dislodge French and Batavian control of Holland, ending with the Convention of Alkmaar in October 1799.
