Battle of Kozludzha

Battle context

The Battle of Kozludzha was one of the final and decisive engagements of the Sixth Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774). A Russian force of approximately 8,000 routed an Ottoman army of some 40,000, inflicting around 3,000 casualties and delivering a major victory that helped bring the war to a close on terms favorable to Russia. The battle contributed directly to the peace treaty that followed, and it established Alexander Suvorov's reputation as one of the foremost commanders of his era. Despite the scale of the victory, a subsequent council of generals declined to press an offensive beyond the Balkan Mountains, citing poor roads and provisions available only until 12 July. Commander-in-chief Rumyantsev-Zadunaisky was dissatisfied with this restraint and assigned responsibility to Lieutenant-General Kamensky, the senior officer at the council. The operational pause notwithstanding, Kozludzha's strategic effect held: the Ottoman position was sufficiently undermined that a favorable peace soon followed.
