Battle context

The Battle of Konna in January 2013 was among the first engagements of Operation Serval, the French military intervention in the Mali War. When Ansar Dine and associated Islamist forces advanced on Konna, the Malian government of Dioncounda Traoré requested French support, drawing Paris directly into the conflict under the direction of President François Hollande. The engagement marked a decisive shift in the character of the war: what had been primarily a Malian internal conflict against northern Islamist rebels became an internationalized counterinsurgency with French forces playing an active combat role. Ansar Dine, led by Iyad Ag Ghaly, suffered roughly 150 casualties against a numerically larger Malian force, signaling early that French intervention would impose significant costs on rebel advances into central Mali.
