Battle context

The Battle of Königsberg was one of the final operations of the East Prussian offensive, concluding with the Soviet capture of a heavily fortified German city in four days of urban warfare. The city had been effectively isolated since late January 1945, when Soviet forces first surrounded it, and by March 1945 it lay hundreds of kilometres behind the main front line. Control of the overland corridor to the port of Pillau was contested during the siege, but the garrison's position became untenable after a three-day assault. The German commander's surrender on 9 April eliminated a significant pocket of resistance and secured Soviet control over East Prussia, removing one of the last organized German defensive positions in the region as the war in Europe approached its end. The city itself subsequently became Kaliningrad, incorporated into the Soviet Union.
