Battle context

At Koljonvirta, a Swedish force of roughly 1,200–1,800 troops under Johan August Sandels repulsed a Russian force estimated at 5,000–6,000, inflicting over 1,100 casualties on the attackers. The engagement demonstrated that Swedish and Finnish resistance could exact a heavy tactical price on Russian forces despite severe numerical disadvantage during the Finnish War of 1808–1809. The Swedish success at the Virta Bridge represented one of the more consequential defensive stands of the campaign, checking Russian momentum at a moment when the broader war was trending against Sweden.
