The Battle of Kobrin, fought on 27 July 1812 in the opening stage of the French invasion of Russia, resulted in a clear Russian victory over the Saxon corps under Jean Reynier. The engagement demonstrated that the southern flank of the invasion was not immune to effective Russian counteraction, as Alexander Tormasov's forces, numbering roughly 44,000 against a Saxon strength of 15,000, inflicted approximately 2,300 casualties on the Saxon side. Reynier's decision to underestimate Tormasov's strength and overstretch his troops left an entire brigade exposed, undercutting the broader French strategic assumption that satellite forces could secure the flanks of the main advance without difficulty. The outcome at Kobrin represented one of the early reverses suffered by Napoleon's allied contingents in 1812 and underscored the risk of dispersed dispositions against a numerically superior and operationally alert opponent.
