Battle context
The Battle of Kircholm, fought in September 1605 near present-day Salaspils in Latvia, was a decisive engagement of the Polish–Swedish War of 1600–1611. A Swedish expedition under Charles IX had moved to besiege Riga, a strategically vital city in the contested Baltic region. The Commonwealth relief force under Jan Karol Chodkiewicz, numbering roughly 3,600 against a Swedish strength of nearly 11,000, defeated the besieging army and compelled it to abandon the operation entirely. Swedish casualties of approximately 8,000 represented a catastrophic loss relative to the force committed. The victory secured Riga from capture and preserved Commonwealth control over a key Baltic port, directly frustrating Swedish ambitions to dominate the eastern Baltic littoral during this phase of the war.
