A French force of approximately 24,000 under Jean-Baptiste Kléber faced a significantly smaller Austrian force of around 14,000 commanded by Merveldt and Paul Kray. The battle is sometimes referred to as the Battle of Uckerath after a nearby village now part of Hennef, reflecting the localized geographic complexity that has complicated its identification in the historical record.
