Battle context
The Battle of Kirbekan was an engagement during the British Nile Column's advance in the Mahdist War. A force of roughly 1,000 British troops under General Earle stormed and seized the heights of Kirbekan, which were defended by a Mahdist force reported at several times that strength. The assault resulted in a total rout of the Mahdist defenders, who suffered approximately 2,000 casualties. The action demonstrated the British column's capacity to dislodge entrenched Mahdist positions despite a significant numerical disadvantage, securing a key strongpoint along the Nile axis of advance.
