The Battle of Kings Mountain was a decisive Patriot victory over Loyalist militia forces during the southern campaign of the American Revolutionary War, fought on October 7, 1780 in what is now Cherokee County, South Carolina. The engagement pitted Patriot militia against a Loyalist force commanded by British Major Patrick Ferguson of the 71st Regiment of Foot, resulting in significant Loyalist casualties. Because both sides were composed of American-born combatants, the battle has been characterized as the war's largest all-American fight, reflecting the civil-war dimension of the conflict in the southern colonies.
