Battle context

The fall of Kherson on 1 March 2022 represented an early Russian territorial gain on the southern front of the full-scale war. Russian forces overcame resistance from local territorial defense fighters and established a military occupation of the city. The capture gave Russia control of a significant urban center in southern Ukraine, extending its foothold in the region during the opening phase of the invasion.
