Battle of Khalkhyn Temple

Significance

The Battle of Khalkhyn Temple was one of a series of border incidents between Mongolia, the Soviet Union, Japan, and Manchukuo that ran from 1932 to 1939. The clash occurred near the Buddhist temple of Khalkhyn, on the frontier between Manchukuo and Mongolia northeast of Buir Lake, in territory that is now Inner Mongolia, China. Mongolian People's Army cavalry engaged Manchukuo Imperial Army patrol units and Japanese soldiers in the area, illustrating the persistent friction along this contested border. The incident contributed to the pattern of escalating confrontations that eventually culminated in the large-scale fighting at Khalkhin Gol in 1939.
