Battle context
The Battle of Køge Bay, fought on 1 January 1677 during the Scanian War, saw a Danish–Norwegian force of 6,700 under Niels Juel engage a Swedish imperial fleet of 9,200 under Henrik Horn. Swedish casualties of 3,000 against no recorded Danish–Norwegian losses indicate a substantial Danish–Norwegian success. Within the Scanian War, a conflict in which Denmark–Norway sought to recover territories lost to Sweden in earlier seventeenth-century wars, such an engagement at sea would have carried direct consequence for control of the Baltic approaches and the balance of naval power between the two kingdoms.
