Overview
The Battle of Keren took place from 3 February to 27 March 1941. Keren was attacked by the British during the East African Campaign of the Second World War. A force of Italian regular and colonial troops defended the position against troops mostly from Sudan and British India and Free French forces. The town of Keren, in the colony of Italian East Africa, was of tactical importance to both sides. The road and railway through Keren were the main routes to the colonial capital of Italian Eritrea at Asmara and the Red Sea port of Massawa, which surrendered to the British after the battle.

Significance
The Battle of Keren was a central engagement of the East African Campaign, fought from 3 February to 27 March 1941. Control of Keren was strategically critical because the road and railway running through the town constituted the main routes to Asmara, the colonial capital of Italian Eritrea, and to the Red Sea port of Massawa. A British Empire force of approximately 13,000 troops drawn largely from Sudan and British India, alongside Free French forces, attacked a defending Italian force of around 31,000 regular and colonial troops. The prolonged fighting produced significant casualties on both sides — over 3,200 British Empire losses and approximately 3,000 Italian — before the position was taken. The fall of Keren directly opened the way to Asmara and Massawa; Massawa subsequently surrendered to the British, effectively ending organized Italian resistance in Eritrea and accelerating the collapse of Italian East Africa as a viable colonial and military entity.
