Battle of Kaukaba

Significance

The Battle of Kaukaba occurred approximately six weeks after the first Norwegian troops arrived in Lebanon as part of the international peacekeeping presence deployed following the Israeli invasion earlier in 1978. The attack by PLO soldiers on Norwegian peacekeepers demonstrated the immediate dangers facing the newly deployed force and underscored the volatility of the operating environment. The Norwegian military's release of sound recordings from the engagement in 2008 preserved it as a documented episode in the early history of the peacekeeping mission.
