Battle context
The Battle of Karpenisi pitted a Greek force of 1,200 under Markos Botsaris against an Ottoman army of approximately 10,000 under Mustafa Pasha Bushatli, resulting in Ottoman casualties of around 1,000. The engagement demonstrated that smaller Greek revolutionary units could inflict significant losses on much larger Ottoman formations during the Greek War of Independence. Botsaris was a prominent Souliot commander, and the battle near the town of Karpenisi represented continued Greek military resistance in the western mainland theater of the war.
