Battle context
At Kambula on 29 March 1879, a Zulu force of approximately 20,000 warriors attacked the British camp commanded by Evelyn Wood, one day after routing the British mounted element at Hlobane. The assault ended in a severe Zulu defeat, with some 2,000 Zulu killed against a British force of around 2,086. The battle's impact extended beyond the casualty count: according to the overview, the warriors lost their belief in victory following the engagement. This psychological collapse marked a decisive shift in the Anglo-Zulu War's momentum. The war continued until the Zulu defeat at Ulundi on 4 July 1879, but Kambula had already broken the offensive capacity and confidence of the Zulu military effort, making that final defeat the culmination of a deterioration that began at Kambula.
