Battle of Kamatero

Battle context

The Battle of Kamatero, fought on the night of 27 January 1827, resulted in a decisive Ottoman victory over Greek republican forces in the wider context of the Greek War of Independence. The Greek force, numbering some 3,500 troops under Colonel Denis Bourbaki and co-commanders Vasos Mavrovouniotis and Panagiotakis Notaras, was defeated by Reşid Mehmed Pasha's Ottoman force of approximately 2,000 men, with Ottoman casualties recorded at around 500. The outcome demonstrated the continued operational effectiveness of Ottoman field commanders despite the drawn-out nature of the independence struggle, and represented a setback for the First Hellenic Republic's military capacity in the region at a critical stage of the war.
