Battle context
The Battle of Kalach was a pivotal engagement on the Eastern Front that cleared the path for the German Sixth Army's advance on Stalingrad. Soviet forces deployed the 62nd and 64th Armies in a Don River bridgehead west of Kalach with the intent of impeding the German drive eastward. Despite an early Soviet counter-attack that temporarily forced German forces onto the defense, German resupply allowed a flanking assault that collapsed the bridgehead and encircled part of the 62nd Army. The German victory opened the Don River crossing and set the operational conditions for the Battle of Stalingrad, one of the most consequential engagements of the entire Eastern Front campaign.
