The Battle of Jutas on 13 September 1808 was a Swedish tactical victory fought to protect a retreat already in progress across Ostrobothnia. With the main Swedish force withdrawing from Vaasa to Nykarleby, Russian troops moved to cut off the retreat. Georg Carl von Döbeln led a Swedish force to intercept them and succeeded, securing the withdrawal route. The victory proved strategically hollow: the very next day the main Swedish army was defeated at the Battle of Oravais, negating whatever operational breathing room Jutas had provided. Within the broader Finnish War the engagement illustrates the deteriorating Swedish position by autumn 1808, with forces reduced to defensive retreats and rearguard actions rather than contesting territory.
