Significance

The Battle of Jowhar was fought on December 27, 2006, as part of the broader Ethiopian military intervention in support of Somalia's Transitional Federal Government against the Islamic Courts Union. The engagement at Jowhar formed one episode in the rapid Ethiopian and TFG offensive that moved against ICU-held territory during late December 2006, a campaign that succeeded in dismantling the ICU's control over much of southern and central Somalia within a matter of weeks.
