Battle context
The Battle of Jaguarão was fought on 27 January 1865 in the town of Jaguarão, in the Brazilian province of Rio Grande do Sul, between Imperial Brazilian forces and a Uruguayan militia force during the Uruguayan War. The engagement placed the conflict directly on Brazilian soil, reflecting the cross-border character of the war and the reach of Uruguayan militia operations under commanders Basilio Muñoz and Timoteo Aparicio. With a Uruguayan force of approximately 1,500 engaged against Imperial Brazilian Army units, the battle represented a significant militia commitment during a war that would culminate in Brazilian-backed regime change in Montevideo.
