Battle context
The Battle of Ituzaingó, fought between a Brazilian force under the Marquess of Barbacena and a larger United Provinces army under Carlos María de Alvear, was a significant engagement of the Cisplatine War. With United Provinces forces numbering approximately 7,700 against Brazil's 6,300, and Brazilian casualties ranging as high as 800 compared to a maximum of 216 on the United Provinces side, the engagement reflected a substantial disparity in battlefield cost to each side. The battle was one of the principal armed confrontations of a war that would ultimately result in the independence of the Banda Oriental as the Estado Oriental del Uruguay, ending neither in clear Brazilian territorial retention nor outright United Provinces annexation of the disputed Cisplatine Province.
