Battle context

The battle for Irpin was part of the broader Russian offensive against Kyiv during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine that began in 2022. Russian forces, outnumbering Ukrainian defenders by a significant margin, contested control of the city as part of an effort to advance on the Ukrainian capital. Ukrainian forces, despite the disparity in size, held and ultimately recaptured Irpin by 28 March 2022. The recapture marked one of the first successful Ukrainian counteractions during the opening phase of the war, denying Russian forces a staging position on the approaches to Kyiv and contributing to the eventual failure of the Russian offensive against the capital.
