Battle context

The Battle of Inkerman, fought on 5 November 1854 during the Crimean War, marked a decisive shift in Russian strategic confidence. Despite fielding a force of approximately 35,000 against a combined British and French strength of around 15,700, the Russian army suffered roughly 11,959 casualties against allied losses of 4,373. The engagement broke the will of the Russian Army to defeat the allies in open field engagements, after which operations shifted toward the protracted siege of Sevastopol. The battle thus closed the phase of Russian offensive action and locked both sides into a siege war that would define the remainder of the conflict.
