Significance

The Battle of the Indus, fought on the banks of the Indus River in November 1221, was the concluding engagement of the Mongol invasion of the Khwarazmian Empire. Genghis Khan, alongside his sons Chagatai Khan and Ögedei Khan, led a force of 50,000 against the Khwarazmian commander Jalal al-Din Mangburni, who could field only 3,000 troops. The result was an overwhelming Mongol victory, with Khwarazmian casualties recorded at 30,000. The battle marked the effective destruction of organized Khwarazmian military resistance, completing the campaign that had dismantled one of the major powers of the Islamic world in the space of roughly two years. Jalal al-Din had represented the last credible center of Khwarazmian resistance following the collapse of his father's sultanate under Mongol pressure, and his defeat on the Indus extinguished that remnant force, leaving the Mongol Empire in unchallenged control of the former Khwarazmian domains.
