Battle context

The Battle of Ifoghas marked a turning point in the Mali War following the defeats inflicted on jihadist forces at Konna and Diabaly in January 2013. After those reverses, Ansar Dine and AQIM fighters abandoned Timbuktu and withdrew into the Adrar Tigharghar, a mountain range in northeastern Mali that had served as their long-standing sanctuary. French forces rapidly pursued, securing Tessalit and Aguelhok before launching Operation Panther into the Tigharghar massif. The fall of the Ametettai Valley on March 3 and the subsequent clearing operations through March 31 deprived the jihadist groups of their principal Sahelian sanctuary and the bulk of their military arsenal, which had been drawn from captured Malian army stocks and materiel sourced from Libya. The loss of this base significantly degraded the operational capacity of AQIM and Ansar Dine and removed the territorial foothold from which they had projected force across northern Mali.
