Battle of Ica

Overview

The Battle of Ica or Disaster at Macacona was a battle during the Peruvian War of Independence, which occurred on 7 April 1822 at the Hacienda Macacona near Ica, between the Liberation Army of Peru under command of Peruvian General Domingo Tristán, and the Spanish Royal Army under Gen. Brigadier José de Canterac. The Patriot army was decisively routed.

Significance

The Battle of Ica, also called the Disaster at Macacona, was a severe defeat for the Liberation Army of Peru during the Peruvian War of Independence. Fought at Hacienda Macacona near Ica on April 7, 1822, the engagement resulted in the decisive routing of the Patriot force under Domingo Tristán, with casualties reaching roughly half the Liberating Expedition's engaged strength of 2,244 men. The scale of the loss represented a significant setback to Patriot operations in Peru, demonstrating that Spanish Royal forces under José de Canterac retained the capacity to meet and overwhelm independence forces in open battle at this stage of the campaign.
