Battle context

The Battle of Hyvinkää marked the fall of a Red-held locality that had been under socialist control for three months, taken as part of the German Baltic Sea Division's northward advance from Helsinki during the final weeks of the Finnish Civil War. The capture opened the rail corridor further into Red-held territory and contributed to the systematic collapse of Red positions across southern Finland. The battle's immediate aftermath was defined as much by violence as by military outcome: White forces executed approximately 150 Reds, actual or suspected, during May, reflecting the broader pattern of post-battle reprisals that characterized the White victory across the Civil War.
