Battle context
The Battle of Hühnerwasser was the first engagement of the Austro-Prussian War, opening the Königgrätz campaign in Bohemia on 26 June 1866. Prussian Elbe Army forces under Herwarth von Bittenfeld clashed with elements of the Austrian I Corps under Leopold Gondrecourt, inflicting 277 casualties on an Austrian force of approximately 1,500 men. As the war's inaugural action, it marked the beginning of Prussian operational pressure into Bohemia that would culminate at Königgrätz, establishing early momentum for the Elbe Army's advance.
