Battle of Huaqui

The Battle of Huaqui or Battle of Guaqui-modern spelling-, was a battle on June 20, 1811, between the Primera Junta's revolutionary troops and the royalist troops of the Viceroyalty of Peru on the border between Upper Peru,, resulting in a comprehensive defeat of the revolutionary armies.

Significance

The Battle of Huaqui resulted in a comprehensive defeat of the Primera Junta's revolutionary forces at the hands of the royalist troops of the Viceroyalty of Peru. Fought on the border of Upper Peru, the engagement pitted roughly 5,000 Río de la Plata troops under Juan José Castelli and Antonio González Balcarce against a superior royalist force of approximately 8,000 under José Manuel de Goyeneche. The revolutionary side suffered around 1,000 casualties. The defeat checked the Río de la Plata's drive into Upper Peru and restored royalist control along that frontier, setting back the independence cause in the region during the broader conflict that would continue until 1825.
