Battle context
The Battle of Hoogstraten, fought on 11 January 1814, resulted in a victory for the Russo-Prussian-British force under Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Bülow over the French army commanded by François Roguet. With a Coalition force of approximately 12,000 against a French strength of around 10,000, the engagement formed part of the broader Coalition pressure on French-held territory in the Low Countries during the War of the Sixth Coalition. The battle comprised a series of engagements between Essen and Turnhout in the Kempen region, and its outcome added to the cumulative military setbacks France faced in early 1814 as Coalition armies closed in from multiple directions.
