The Battle of Honkaniemi holds a distinct place in the Winter War as the only instance in which Finnish forces deployed tanks en masse in combat. Finland's armored strength was severely limited throughout the conflict, making this concentrated use of armor a singular operational event. The battle occurred in late February 1940, during the final weeks of the war, when Soviet pressure along the front had intensified following the breakthrough of the Mannerheim Line.
