Battle context

The Battle of Hokuetsu was fought in the northwestern region of Japan, in the area of modern Niigata Prefecture, as part of the broader Boshin War that accompanied the Meiji Restoration. The engagement placed imperial forces under commanders including Yamagata Aritomo and Kuroda Kiyotaka against Shogunate forces that were substantially outnumbered, with Satsuma Domain fielding roughly 30,000 troops against fewer than 2,000 on the Shogunate side. Despite this disparity, imperial forces sustained approximately 1,000 casualties, indicating that Shogunate resistance in this northwestern theater was consequential. The battle was part of the wider campaign to extend imperial control beyond the central domains and into regions where Tokugawa loyalist networks remained active.
