Battle of Hohenlinden

Battle context

Fought on 3 December 1800, Hohenlinden delivered a decisive French victory that effectively ended the War of the Second Coalition. Jean Moreau's army inflicted casualties of roughly 13,550–15,500 on the larger Austrian and Bavarian force commanded by the 18-year-old Archduke John, against French losses of no more than 3,000. The scale of the Austrian defeat was severe enough to force a disastrous retreat and compel the Habsburgs to request an armistice. Alongside Marengo earlier that year, Hohenlinden broke Austrian resistance and brought the coalition to a close, consolidating French dominance on the continent and clearing the path toward the peace settlement that concluded the war.
