Significance

The Battle of Hogland opened the naval phase of the Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790, pitting fleets under Prince Charles, Duke of Södermanland and Russian admiral Samuel Greig against each other in one of the war's earliest major engagements. Swedish casualties of between 1,000 and 1,200 against forces of comparable size on both sides indicate the action was sharply contested, with Sweden absorbing serious losses relative to the forces committed. The battle's place in the wider conflict is that of an early test of naval strength between the two powers at the outset of hostilities, setting the operational context for the prolonged naval campaigning that would characterize the war through 1790.
