Battle context

The Battle of Hòa Mộc was the most fiercely fought action of the Sino-French War. Colonel Giovanninelli's 1st Brigade of the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps, numbering 3,400 men, broke through Black Flag and Yunnan Army forces that were blocking the relief route to the besieged French post of Tuyên Quang. French casualties reached 408, while Chinese losses were estimated between 1,000 and 2,000. The engagement decided the fate of the Tuyên Quang garrison by clearing the path for relief, and its intensity — reflected in the casualty disproportion — marked it as the defining combat action of the broader Sino-French conflict in Tonkin.
