The Battle of Hòa Bình, fought from November 1951 to February 1952, was a French Union operation designed to compel the Việt Minh to engage on French terms. With 20,000 French Union troops facing a Việt Minh force of approximately 30,000 under Võ Nguyên Giáp and Hoàng Văn Thái, the engagement produced substantial casualties on both sides — roughly 2,000 for the French Union and between 5,000 and 12,000 for the Việt Minh. The operation reflected French strategic frustration with an enemy that consistently chose when and where to fight, and the attempt to draw the Việt Minh into a set-piece confrontation was a recurring French objective during this phase of the war.
