The Battle of Hightower took place at the Cherokee village of High Town (Itawayi), in what is now Floyd County, Georgia, as part of the broader Cherokee–American wars in which Cherokee communities resisted encroachment on tribal lands by settlers of the new United States. The engagement resulted in a Cherokee defeat at the hands of a force led by John Sevier, who would later serve as Governor of Tennessee. The battle was one of several operations during this period in which American frontier forces struck directly at Cherokee settlements, undermining the tribe's capacity to defend its territorial holdings against ongoing settler expansion.
