The Battle of Hexham on 15 May 1464 marked the effective end of significant Lancastrian resistance in the north of England during the early years of Edward IV's reign. Fought between a Yorkist force under Baron Montagu and Lancastrian commanders including the Duke of Somerset, Baron Ros, and Baron Hungerford, the engagement resolved the prolonged contest for control of the northern counties that had persisted after the Yorkist seizure of the throne. Within the broader Wars of the Roses, Hexham thus functioned as a closing action to the first sustained phase of northern Lancastrian opposition, consolidating Yorkist authority over a region that had served as the principal base of Lancastrian armed activity since the early 1460s.
