Battle context

The Battle of Handschuhsheim, fought near the village north of Heidelberg in September 1795, resulted in a French defeat during the War of the First Coalition. Despite fielding a larger force of 12,000 men against an Austrian army of 8,000 under Quosdanovich, the French under Dufour suffered disproportionate casualties of 1,500 and were routed. The engagement illustrates the limits of numerical advantage in the face of effective combined-arms action during the Rhine campaign of 1795, a period when both France and Austria were contesting control of the German theater as part of the broader struggle between Republican France and the Coalition powers.
