Significance

The Battle of Hadrut was fought in early October 2020 over the town of Hadrut and its surrounding villages and heights, a territory administered by the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh as part of Hadrut Province but claimed by Azerbaijan as the seat of Khojavend District. Control of this area held administrative and symbolic weight for both sides, representing one of the contested zones where Azerbaijani forces sought to reverse the territorial situation established after the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. The engagement formed part of the broader Azerbaijani offensive during the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War of 2020, in which Azerbaijan pursued the recapture of districts it had lost in the 1990s conflict.
