The Battle of Raab (Győr) was fought on 28 June 1849 as part of the Summer Campaign of the Hungarian War of Independence. The Hungarian Revolutionary Army, led by Generals Ernő Poeltenberg and Artúr Görgei, faced a substantially larger combined Austrian and Russian force under Julius Jacob von Haynau, supported by a Russian division commanded by Feodor Sergeyevich Panyutyin. The disparity in forces — roughly 12,380 Hungarian troops against more than 64,000 on the opposing side — illustrates the broader strategic pressure the Hungarian revolutionary cause faced as Austrian and Russian intervention intensified in the summer of 1849. The engagement at Raab formed part of the wider Austrian effort to suppress the Hungarian revolution before it could consolidate its gains.
