The Battle of Guningtou was fought in October 1949 on the island of Kinmen in the Taiwan Strait during the final stages of the Chinese Civil War. The Republic of China force of approximately 40,000 confronted a People's Republic of China landing force of roughly 19,000. Communist casualties of 3,873 against ROC losses of 1,267 indicate a significant defensive success for Nationalist forces. The battle's location on Kinmen, an island positioned between the mainland and Taiwan, made it a critical test of whether the People's Liberation Army could project amphibious power across the Taiwan Strait. A successful defense allowed the Republic of China to retain the island and demonstrated that the Nationalist retreat to Taiwan was not total capitulation; offshore island positions could be held against Communist pressure, a strategic reality that shaped the subsequent cross-strait standoff.
