Battle context
The Battle of Groenkop, fought on 25 December 1901, saw Head Commandant Christiaan de Wet's Orange Free State commando defeat a British Imperial Yeomanry force under Major Williams. With de Wet commanding approximately 700 men against a British force of around 400, the engagement was part of the wider guerrilla phase of the Second Boer War, during which Boer commanders conducted mobile operations against British columns and garrisons across the veld. De Wet was among the most active and effective Boer commanders of this period, and actions such as Groenkop demonstrated the continued capacity of Boer forces to strike successfully despite British efforts to suppress the guerrilla campaign through blockhouse lines and sweeping operations.
