Battle context

The Battle of Groenkloof resulted in the defeat and capture of Commandant Lötter's Boer commando by a British column under Colonel Harry Scobell. The action took place in the Cape Colony, where Boer commanders had sought to extend the war beyond the Transvaal and Orange River Colony by operating among the Afrikaner population of the Cape. The capture of Lötter's commando represented a direct check on this strategy, removing an active Boer force from the colony and demonstrating British capacity to run down and neutralize irregular units operating in the region during the later stages of the Second Boer War.
