Battle of Goose Green

Overview

The Battle of Goose Green was fought from 28 to 29 May 1982 by British and Argentine forces during the Falklands War. Located on East Falkland's central isthmus, the settlement of Goose Green was the site of a tactically vital airfield. Argentine forces were located in a well-defended position within striking distance of San Carlos Water, where the British task force had positioned themselves after their amphibious landing.

Significance

Goose Green was the first significant land engagement of the Falklands War following the British amphibious landing at San Carlos Water. The Argentine garrison held a well-defended position at the settlement's tactically vital airfield on East Falkland's central isthmus, placing it within striking distance of the British task force anchorage. Neutralizing this position removed a direct threat to San Carlos Water and secured the isthmus, opening the route for further British operations on East Falkland. The engagement resulted in the capture of an Argentine force of roughly 1,000, with 961 casualties recorded on the Argentine side. The loss of commanders Jones and the subsequent command by Keeble underscored the intensity of the fighting. The battle established that British ground forces could dislodge entrenched Argentine defenders, with implications for the remainder of the campaign.
