Battle of Golymin

Battle context

The Battle of Golymin was fought on 26 December 1806 during the War of the Fourth Coalition, at the same time as the Battle of Pułtusk, reflecting Napoleon's attempt to bring the Russian army to a decisive engagement in Poland. Facing approximately 38,000 French troops under Marshal Murat, the Russian force of around 22,000 men under Prince Golitsyn successfully disengaged rather than being destroyed or forced into surrender. This outcome denied the French the annihilating victory they sought and allowed Russian forces to preserve their cohesion for continued operations in the campaign.
