Battle context
The Battle of Goito was a Piedmontese victory fought during the First Italian War of Independence on 30 May 1848. The battle turned on the Austrian attempt to break through to Peschiera, a fortified position then under siege by Sardinian forces. The Austrians failed to penetrate the Piedmontese lines, and Peschiera surrendered the day before the engagement — meaning the relief effort had already been rendered moot even as the fighting concluded. The outcome confirmed Sardinian control of Peschiera and represented a tangible territorial gain for Charles Albert's campaign against Austrian dominance in northern Italy, reinforcing Piedmontese momentum in the opening phase of the war.
